2016 Sports Moments: Top 10

What a year! I hope everybody enjoyed 2016. If you didn’t for whatever reason, I hope 2017 will be a better one. In the sports world, we definitely had our fair share of good and bad moments. We even had some interesting moments like Odell Beckham Jr. going one on one with a kicking net (and losing), Rougned Odor knocking the shades off of Jose Bautista’s face, Kevin Durant shaking up the NBA by signing with the Golden State Warriors, and JR Smith being topless for about half the week (supposedly) since the beginning of the Cleveland Cavaliers championship parade.

Honorable Mentions

  • Joe Thomas Sr. (55 year old running back from South Carolina State becoming the oldest man to play Division I football. His son Joe Thomas Jr. is a linebacker for the Green Bay Packers)
  • Colin Kaepernick Kneeling (You may or may not agree with Colin Kaepernick’s kneeling to the National Anthem, but the reason behind the action should be the focal point)
  • Conor McGregor Dominance (Conor McGregor became the first 2 division champion in UFC this year. His next venture may be a fight with Floyd Mayweather, but we’ll see)

10) Ken Griffey Jr. Hall Of Fame (Almost) Unanimous

“The Kid” is my all-time favorite baseball player, ever since I saw him swing with the Seattle Mariners (I barely remember that). In January, Griffey and Mike Piazza were the only two players elected to the National Baseball Hall Of Fame. This is the hardest sport to get placed into the hall of fame because it requires 75% of the vote. The most impressive and staggering note to take away is that Griffey received the highest percent of votes in the history of Major League Baseball at 99.3% (437 out of 440 votes). Personally, Ken Griffey Jr. should have been the first unanimous hall of famer, and I would love to hear their reason for not voting Griffey in for those 3 voters who didn’t vote for him. Nevertheless, this is an astonishing achievement to cap off a remarkable career.

9) Stephen Curry: Unanimous MVP

Speaking of unanimous, Stephen Curry became the first player in NBA history to be voted unanimous MVP of a season. In 2015, the Golden State Warriors shocked the world by winning their first NBA Title in 40 years. Trying to top that achievement in 2016, the Warriors won the most games in a season in NBA history with 73, while Steph Curry was putting on a display. Even though Golden State came up a Draymond Green kick and few plays short of repeating this past June, they found a way to steal the headlines over the summer (signing of Kevin Durant).

8) Von Miller Dominates Super Bowl 50

Even though Cam Newton (#1 overall pick) was the only player selected ahead of Von Miller (#2 overall pick) in the 2011 NFL Draft, Von Miller came out on top on the biggest stage. Newton looked like “Superman” throughout the whole season until the Super Bowl, where Miller registered 2.5 sacks and forcing 2 turnovers. His constant pass rush disrupted the Carolina Panthers offense the entire game. If Von Miller wasn’t hitting the quarterback, Demarcus Ware was definitely getting a few hits in from what I remember.

7) Bolt, Phelps, USA Takeover Rio 2016

Rio 2016 will go down as one of the most memorable summer Olympics ever. It signifies the end of an era with Usain Bolt accomplishing the “triple-triple” (winning the 100m, 200m, and 4 x 100m relay races consecutively in 2008, 2012, & 2016) and Michael Phelps winning a total of 28 medals (23 gold medals). The United States also were dominant in swimming events, gymnastics, and track and field events. I’m going to miss seeing Bolt and Phelps dominate their respective competition, but I’m excited to see who’s going to be the next sensation on sports’ biggest stage in Tokyo 2020.

6) Villanova Buzzer Beater

From what I remember, Villanova has always been a tournament let down whenever they are seeded high. This past March and April, Villanova actually lived up to the hype. Their mind-blowing victory over North Carolina in the NCAA Championship game was the icing on the cake. That game, in particular, was arguably the best championship game I’ve ever witnessed. The game had non-stop action with suspense and an appropriate climax. Kris Jenkins brought the game to a close and a National Title home to “Nova”.

5) Eric Berry’s Homecoming

PLEASE WATCH THIS VIDEO. Eric Berry has been my favorite safety in the NFL since he came into the league back in 2010. Berry was diagnosed with cancer in December of 2014 and was pronounced cancer free in July of 2015. When he bounced back after 7 months, it gave me a stronger reason of why he’s my favorite safety. Atlanta is Eric Berry’s hometown and where he received treatment during his fight against cancer. In his first visit back since therapy, Berry had a “pick 6” and a failed 2 point conversation returned for a touchdown (another pick 6) to solidify the Kansas City Chiefs victory over the Atlanta Falcons.

4) Mamba Out: Kobe Bryant’s Final Game

On the last day of the 2015-16 regular season, you had the choice to either watch the Golden State Warriors go for 73 wins or Kobe Bryant’s last game. I caught the 4th quarter of “Mamba Out”. I wasn’t the biggest Kobe fan, but I truly respected him. Watching the final 3 to 4 minutes live gave me chills and rewatching this video duplicated how I felt about it. Seeing him leave the game lets you know that an era in the NBA has ended (and my childhood basketball icons are gone). When you add Tim Duncan, Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen (officially announced his retirement) to that list of retirees in 2016, you have a higher level of appreciation for the game of basketball (and an epic hall of fame class down the line). Paul Pierce, Dirk Nowitzki, and Manu Ginobili are next in line.

3) Cavaliers Comeback 3-1

In June of 2015, the Cleveland Cavaliers came up short in the NBA Finals to the Golden State Warriors. Even though LeBron James nearly averaged a triple-double, missing Kevin Love and Kyrie Irving due to injuries played a crucial part of them coming up short. A year later (with healthy teammates), the Cavs pulled off an improbable comeback in the NBA Finals. What really makes this achievement special is the fact that this is the first major championship for the city of Cleveland since the Cleveland Browns won in 1964 during the Jim Brown era. This was also the first ever NBA Title for the Cavaliers. Being a Chicago Bulls fan, I wasn’t thrilled about Cleveland winning, however, I know the importance that particular title meant to the city of Cleveland. Congrats, again, to the Cleveland Cavaliers!

2) Passing Of Legends

With the amazing things that I’ve previously mentioned during this countdown thus far, we lost some great people along the way of this special year of 2016. Some of the icons that we’ve lost this year includes boxing legend Muhammad Ali (His contributions inside and outside the ring can’t be compared to another), golfing legend Arnold Palmer (golf’s most beloved figure and he surged the sport into popularity), legendary sports broadcaster Craig Sager (#SagerStrong), former NFL head coach Dennis Green (coached the Minnesota Vikings and Arizona Cardinals), legendary women’s basketball head coach Pat Summitt, and ESPN’s reporter John Saunders. I know it can be sad to think about, but we should remember their achievements and how meaningful their contributions were.

1) Cubs Win!

This is by far the most memorable moment for not only this year but the best moment for certain people’s lives. There have been generations that have waited for the day for the Chicago Cubs to win a World Series championship since 1908. I remember a little over a decade ago in 2003 when the Cubs were 5 outs away from the World Series. Then…the Steve Bartman incident happened. I seriously believe Chicago is the best sports city and Chicago Cubs fans are the most loyal fans amongst all major sports. Chicago coming back from 3-1 against Cleveland (pretty ironic), which included an unreal rain delay in extra innings of game 7, made their championship more fitting for the franchise. I know a few Cubs fans that are still celebrating (and it’s well deserved). 2016 is your year, Chicago Cubs.

Happy Holidays!!

Championship Showdown (JGood)

Coincidentally in the week where the majority of fantasy football championships are taking place, I (Nino Brown) am going against D.Reed (Every Villian Is Lemons) in our league that we’ve been apart of since 2011. This is a chalk matchup of the first and second seed going at it. D.Reed is making his 4th consecutive finals appearance. Two years ago, we battled for the championship, but I came up short. I’ve been looking forward to this matchup since then. Good luck my friend.

wp-1482387388463.jpg

HOT OR NOT 🔥❄️ (D.Reed)

What’s Hot🔥

QB
Philip Rivers (San Diego @ Cleveland)
Philip Rivers is coming off a sub-par performance last week against Oakland throwing for 206 yards, 2 TDs, and 1 INT!! Rivers owners should rejoice because he has a week 16 matchup against the winless Cleveland Browns!!! The Browns have allowed the most touchdown passes to opposing QBs with 31!! Rivers is a safe bet at the QB1 position for championship week!!!

Derek Carr (Indianapolis @ Oakland)
Derek Carr has been downright awful as of late scoring a combined 14 points the past two weeks. This week, Carr and company play host to the Indianapolis Colts and their porous secondary!!! The Colts D surrendered 23 passing touchdowns with an average of 18 fantasy points a game to opposing signal callers!! Carr looks to be in for a “redemption week.”

RB
Todd Gurley (San Francisco @ Los Angeles)
Wait a second, is Todd Gurley on the hot list??!!! I know, I know…Gurley has been the ultimate fantasy “bust” this year, but before you disagree with the decision, just hear me out. The 49’ers are giving up an absurd average of 26 points per game to opposing RBs!!! Both teams in this matchup have problems moving the ball, therefore, I expect for it to be a close one with Gurley racking up a solid chunk of yardage!! All signs point to a productive outing for Gurley, and he is sure to find pay dirt in this one!!!

Bilal Powell (New York Jets @ New England)
Bilal Powell has been smoking hot over the past two weeks!! Powell was inserted into the starting lineup due to Matt Forte’s lingering knee injury!! It seems as if there is a new sheriff in the Jets’ backfield as Powell out-snapped Forte 137 to 19 the last two weeks!! While being heavily involved in both passing and running game, I love Powell’s upside this week, especially in PPR format!!!

WR
Julian Edelman (New York Jets @ New England)
I love Julian Edelman this week simply because of volume!!! Edelman has been targeted a whopping 50 times over the past 4 weeks!! With Rob Gronkowski out for the season, Julian Edelman has become Tom Brady’s “security blanket.” I expect Brady to look Edelman’s way early and often in this one!! Whether standard or PPR, I love Edelman as a solid WR1 this week!!

Michael Crabtree (Indianapolis @ Oakland)
Michael Crabtree is coming off a solid performance against the San Diego Chargers, catching 6 balls for 60 yards and a score!! Crabtree has a week 16 matchup against a beatable Colts secondary. Crabtree has been one of the most consistent WRs this year and still delivers even while playing alongside second-year standout, Amari Cooper. Crabtree makes a fine low-end WR1/high-end WR2 this week!!!

TE
Greg Olsen (Atlanta @ Carolina)
Over the past 2 weeks, Olsen is starting to warm up with 10 receptions for 172 yards! Although Olsen hasn’t found paydirt since week 9, I love Olsen and his week 16 matchup against the Atlanta Falcons!!! In Olsen’s week 4 meeting with Atlanta, he caught 6 passes for 76 yards and a score, therefore, I expect Olsen to find a way to duplicate his week 4 success and break his 6-week scoring drought!!

D/ST
New England (vs New York Jets)
The New England Patriots defense has been on a roll as of late, scoring double-digit points in 2 of their last 3 games!!! With inexperienced QB Bryce Petty coming to town, I see plenty of turnover opportunities in the works!!! New England makes for a top-tier defense this week which such a tasty matchup on the horizon!!
What’s Not❄

QB
Carson Wentz (Philadelphia @ New York Giants)
The Carson Wentz show was here today and gone tomorrow! I have no doubt that Wentz will be a great talent in the years to come, but the future won’t win your fantasy championship this week!!! You can’t afford many mistakes at any position so don’t get cute. Just stick with the sure thing and Wentz isn’t it!!!

RB
Matt Forte (New York Jets @ New England)
Matt Forte’s days may be numbered as the primary ball carrier in the Jets’ backfield! It seems as if Bilal Powell has all but relieved Forte of his backfield duties in both the passing and running game!! Over the past few weeks in Forte’s absence, Powell performed beautifully and with Powell’s recent emergence of “top dog” status, it would be wise to look elsewhere at the RB position!!

WR
Brandon Marshall (New York Jets @ New England)
Brandon Marshall has been a huge fantasy disappointment this season!!! Marshall’s poor play is due in part to the inconsistency at the QB position with both Bryce Petty and Ryan Fitzpatrick. Yes, Marshall is a big name, but that doesn’t mean he deserves a spot in your lineup!! With the lack of consistent play at the QB position in New York, Marshall should remain on the bench if you want to keep your title shot intact!!!

TE
Dwayne Allen (Indianapolis @ Oakland)
The only problem I have with this matchup is that there is no consistency at the TE position on the Colts’ roster!! Jack Doyle, Erik Swoope, and Dwayne Allen all get targeted in the passing game (with Doyle leading the pack as of late) and now is not the week to play TE musical chairs!! During championship week you always wanna go with the sure thing but there is no such thing at TE on the Colts as of right now!!! Stay away!!!

D/ST
Indianapolis (@ Oakland)
The Colts defense put out a stellar performance against the Vikings last week scoring an uncharacteristic 18 points!!! The Colts week 15 defensive performance will be short lived as they travel to Oakland to take on Derek Carr and their high scoring offense!!! Opposing defenses has averaged 3 points per game when facing Oakland!! Don’t even think twice about benching them in this one!!!

Ball Is Life: Circle Of Men Athletics

If you ever lived in Northwest Indiana and have been involved in sports, you will know that this area is called “The Region”. The Region has produced many pro and collegiate athletes in different sports over the past few decades like former MLB center fielder Kenny Lofton (East Chicago, IN). He was a 6x all-star and a 4x gold glove winner. Another is current Carolina Panthers defensive tackle Kawaan Short (East Chicago, IN). In 2015, he was named to the Pro Bowl and was second-team All-Pro.

However, Indiana is known as the Hoosier State. There’s been plenty of successful basketball outcomes from The Region like Glenn “Big Dog” Robinson (Gary, IN), who happens to be an alum from my high school, Roosevelt, in Gary. Robinson was the number 1 overall pick in the 1994 NBA Draft (to the Milwaukee Bucks). He averaged over 20 ppg for his career, was a 2x all-star, and won a championship with the San Antonio Spurs in 2005. Over the past 10 years, more players have been exposed to the NBA like Glenn Robinson III (Gary, IN, and currently with the Indiana Pacers), E’Twaun Moore (East Chicago, IN, and currently with the New Orleans Pelicans), Robbie Hummel (Valparaiso, IN), Branden Dawson (Gary, IN), and Mitch McGary (Chesterton, IN).

We even have athletes now that are already in division 1 or division 1-bound. Charles Cooper, a senior guard at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, helped the Phoenix during the 2015-16 season reach the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1996. Dana Evans, senior guard at Gary West Side High School, is currently ranked #3 at the point guard, and #7 overall for the 2017 class by ESPN. She has committed to Louisville.

wp-1481327848318.jpg
Dana Evans

My friend Leroy Cooper, who is also a part of our basketball network and former intramural basketball teammate, is the co-founder (along with Mr. Daniel Baker) of Circle of Men Athletics (COMA; @Circle_of_Men) . Every since I met Leroy, he has always been the type to lead and show support for others.

wp-1481516536968.jpg

COMA is an organization in Gary Indiana focused on the development of inner city athletes on and off the court…1 Corinthians 9:24-27.

Leroy, who played his last two years of college basketball and spend the following year as assistant head coach at formerly Purdue University Calumet (now Purdue University Northwest), wants help student-athletes on and off the court.

The purpose is to instill life beyond talent for inner city athletes…provide mentorship, training, life skills and exposure to guys with athletic abilities.

In this day and age where violence seems to be at an all-time high (especially the way the city of Chicago is right now), it’s wonderful to know something like COMA is taking place within The Region. However, this organization has plans on spreading the helping hand.

Our vision is to take our not for profit worldwide and change the world through God’s anointing. Changing lives and giving people opportunities to advance through life is God’s kingdom on earth. Our staff is really passionate about our organization, and we have a great success rate so far. We started the organization in 2014 and have placed 78 guys in college on athletic scholarships. Our next showcase is April 22nd, 2017.

The more I looked into COMA, the more impressed I’ve become. This organization has the chance to become something iconic. Sending 78 young men to college in that short amount of time is the one thing that’s sticking out to me. I support anyone that’s trying to do something positive with the youth and the community. Leroy, continue striving for excellence with this program and don’t let any obstacle prevent you from your vision.

Ball Is Life: Windy City’s Spaniards

Last week, I mentioned that I was part of a basketball network at Purdue University Northwest. Apparently, some people within this unofficial fraternity has experienced some unbelievable moments and rare opportunities. A prime example of this is my good friend Angel Martin de Soto, who was the personal assistant of Chicago Bulls forward Nikola Mirotic. I’ve known Angel since 2011 when he first came to the United States from Spain.

He’s one of the best all-around basketball players I ever played with (intramural basketball teammates). From his home country of Spain, Angel has been playing basketball since the age of six. He has played with the youth teams of Unicaja Malaga, one of the Top 5 teams in Spain. Angel has also played 4 years semi-pro in the 3rd Division in Spain.

If you don’t know, Nikola Mirotic is from Spain as well. The 6 foot 10 inch forward was drafted by Houston Rockets with the 23rd overall pick in 2011, but his draft rights were ultimately traded to the Chicago Bulls. Mirotic stayed in Spain until 2014, where he and Real Madrid (basketball team in Spain) reached a buyout of his contract.

Image result for nikola mirotic

I’ve been a Bulls fan ever since I can remember. When Angel first told me about his unusual opportunity back in April of 2015, I was stunned (I actually have that  conversation saved on Facebook).

The reason why I worked for him, it is because Nikola was looking for an assistant that help them with their daily basis in his freshman year. I have a really good relation with his agent and he called me to have a interview.

Even though this job was an experience of a lifetime, just like any job, it came with some hard work and some inconvenient duties.

Everyday was different. It was basically 24/7 on call for whatever they (him and his wife) might need. I usually help them with their personal documents, travel arrangements, game day assistance, like hosting the guests, get their tickets and passes. Also, few times we did some shooting practice in his days off.

On the positive side, just like any job, there are a few benefits that make it worth your time there.

Black Mamba warming up

The fact that both Angel and Nikola Mirotic are from Spain was probably the icing on the cake during their time together. To have someone with you from the same country when trying to adjust to another country’s culture makes the transition less hectic. Angel stopped working for Nikola Mirotic this past August to move back to Spain, but he has truly helped Mirotic adjust to the American culture. As long as Nikola Mirotic is a Chicago Bulls player, I will continue to cheer for him, especially knowing one of my friends has assisted him off the court.

HOT OR NOT 🔥❄️ (D.Reed)

First and foremost, we want to say congratulations if you made the playoffs in your fantasy league(s). Most playoffs for fantasy football starts NFL week 14. At this time, we are aware that his is crunch time so we’ll be available via Twitter for any and every question or concern for your week’s matchup.

What’s Hot🔥

QB

Andy Dalton (Cincinnati @ Cleveland)

Andy Dalton is coming off of a fantastic performance against the Philadelphia Eagles throwing for 332 yards and 2 TDs!!! Even with top target A.J. Green out due to injury (hamstring), Dalton found no problem moving the ball through the air! In week 14, Dalton and company are on the road against a tasty matchup with the winless Cleveland Browns!! Dalton should see no drop off from his week 13 success!!

Jameis Winston (New Orleans @ Tampa Bay)

In Jameis Winston’s last 7 games, he is averaging 18.3 fantasy points per game and has thrown 14 TDs to just four interceptions over that timeframe!! Winston has a week 14 matchup at home with the Saints, who’ve allowed eight of the last 10 quarterbacks they’ve played to throw for multiple scores!!! New Orleans defense hasn’t played particularly well on the road, therefore, I see a great game in the works for “Famous” Jameis!!!

RB

Spencer Ware (Oakland @ Kansas City)

Spencer Ware was quite active in week 13 scoring one touchdown through the air and another score on the ground!! Ware’s day was salvaged by both TDs as he didn’t accumulate many yards from scrimmage (29 yards rushing & 23 receiving) This week, Ware has a home matchup against the Oakland Raiders. In week 6 against Oakland, Ware ran for a season-high 131 yards and a score on 24 carries, and I believe Kansas City would like to build upon that “ground and pound” success!! I believe they will look to get Ware the rock early and establish the run!!!

Lamar Miller (Houston @ Indianapolis)

Lamar Miller put up a stinker against the Green Bay Packers last week carrying the ball 14 times for a measly 22 yards and 1 reception for -4 yards (2 fantasy points total)!!! Miller looks to bounce back in a major way against the Colts who have surrendered the ninth-most rushing yards and the third most yards per carry to opposing backfields!! In week 6 against Indy, Miller ran for 149 yards and a score, and I believe this week will be much of the same!!! Miller is a great play in this one!!!

WR

Julian Edelman (Baltimore @ New England)

With Martellus Bennett a bit banged up and both Rob Gronkowski and Danny Amendola out due to injury, Julian Edelman looks to be the beneficiary of a huge uptick in targets!!! Edelman has seen a team-high of 40 targets in the last 3 games. With Baltimore giving up the eighth most points to wideouts, Edelman could be in store for a huge game in this one!!! I like Julian Edelman as a top 10 WR play this week!!!

Doug Baldwin (Seattle @ Green Bay)

Doug Baldwin has been somewhat of a fantasy disappointment over the past 2 games, but a week 14 matchup with the Green Bay Packers could be just the thing to get Baldwin back on track!! The Packers secondary has struggled against wideouts all season allowing the sixth most fantasy points to the position!!! With the Packers’ run defense being quite stout, Wilson my look to air it out with Baldwin reaping the benefits!!!

TE

Travis Kelce (Oakland @ Kansas City)

Even though Travis Kelce hasn’t found paydirt since week 10, Kelce still has TE position on fire with 3 straight 100+ yard receiving games in his last 3!!! Even with Jeremy Maclin eyeing a possible return this week, Kelce is still “top dog” in the Kansas City receiving core!! No matter the matchup, ride this stud during your playoff run!!!

D/ST

Vikings (vs Jacksonville)

Fun Fact: Did you know that Jacksonville’s Blake Bortles had more “pick-sixes” (11) in his career than wins!!!?? (10) Yep, it’s sad isn’t it!!

Image result for jordan meme

What’s Not❄

QB

Ryan Tannehill (Arizona at Miami)

Ryan Tannehill is about as inconsistent as they come at the position!!! The Dolphins quarterback even fails to take advantage of his better matchups!! Watching Tannehill had to have been brutal for all Dolphins fans as he threw the ball for 226 yds 1 TD and 3INTS!!! He has a tough task this week against the number 2 overall defense in the Arizona Cardinals, therefore I’ll keep Tannehill riding pine in this one!!

RB

Devontae Booker (Denver @ Tennessee)

Devontae Booker hasn’t been all that productive since taking over the starting job from fellow backfield mate C.J. Anderson. The Titans have been a top 7 rush defense over the last month and that doesn’t bode well for someone so touchdown dependent as Booker. It’ll be in your best interest to shy away from Booker in such a crucial week 14 matchup!!!

WR

Allen Robinson (Minnesota @ Jacksonville)

I blame most of Robinson’s fantasy woes on Blake “Turn It Over Often” Bortles!! In most leagues, week 14 is the beginning of the playoffs and although it’s tough to bench a name like Allen Robinson, you can’t afford to start anyone off their name alone!!! He simply hasn’t had the production so it’ll be in your best interest to bench Robinson this week against one of the league’s top secondaries!!!

TE

Martellus Bennett (Baltimore @ New England)

Just because Gronk is out doesn’t mean that Bennett will have automatic production!! Bennett still isn’t 100 percent healthy, and he just hasn’t been involved much in the passing game. He’s only caught 6 of 11 targets over the last 3 weeks, and now he’s up against a Ravens defense who’s among the top of the league in stopping the opposing TE position!! With playoffs implications on the line, benching Bennett may be a smart move this week!!

D/ST

Baltimore (@ New England)

Baltimore D has been an extremely solid defensive play the last few weeks, but a trip to Foxborough to take on Tom Brady and company in prime time may very well fix that!! It’ll be tough to bench such a hot defense, but a matchup against the Pats on the road is one of the league’s tougher tasks!!! I’d look elsewhere for a defense this week!!!

HOT OR NOT 🔥❄️ (D.Reed)

What’s Hot🔥

QB
Colin Kaepernick (San Francisco @ Chicago)
How come no one isn’t talking about how well Colin Kaepernick has been in fantasy this year since he’s been named the starter over Blaine Gabbert!?  Seriously, Kaep has been an absolute stud scoring at least 23 fantasy points in the past 4 weeks!!! Be sure not overlook Kaep again this week as he travels to the Windy City to face an exploitable Bears defense!!! Even though reality hasn’t been great for Kaepernick and the Niners, Kaep has been “fantasy gold” at the QB1 position, and I expect week 13 to be no different!!
Philip Rivers (Tampa Bay @ San Diego)
Philip Rivers is coming off of a very solid road performance against a stingy Houston Texans secondary throwing for 242 yards, 3 scores, and one INT! Rivers had a tough matchup on paper last week, but he’ll have a much better matchup this week as the Chargers play host to the Buccaneers. In years past, it’s been difficult to trust Rivers late in the season, but I like this matchup enough to deem Rivers a fine week 13 QB1!!
RB
Spencer Ware (Kansas City @ Atlanta)
Spencer Ware didn’t have the most productive week against the Denver Broncos, carrying the ball 17 times for 64 yards and catching 2 passes for another 32 yards. I look for Ware to bounce back in full effect this week as he gets a great matchup against the Atlanta Falcons who are second-worst in the league against opposing runners. I expect there will be plenty of opportunities for Ware to find “pay dirt” in his week 13 matchup!!!
Melvin Gordon (Tampa Bay @ San Diego)
Melvin Gordon looks to be one of the top options at the running back position as he faces the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this week. Gordon carried the ball 17 times for 70 yards and added 4 catches for 19 yards en route to a win over the Texans last week!! Gordon has played well all season and has been particularly productive inside the red zone!!! Gordon has been money inside the 10-yard line, and I expect for Gordon to score on multiple occasions this week!!
WR
Michael Thomas (Detroit @ New Orleans)
Michael Thomas has been quite impactful during his rookie campaign catching 65 balls for 789 yards and 7 TDs!!! With injuries keeping Willie Snead on the sideline for a few weeks this year, Thomas has made the best of every opportunity to prove himself as a worthy pass catcher alongside the speedy Brandin Cooks. This week, Thomas has a home matchup in the Superdome against a porous Detroit Lions secondary!! Thomas makes for a fine WR 2 with great upside this week!!!
Sammy Watkins (Buffalo @ Oakland)
Sammy Watkins looks like he is back to his explosive ways after he snagged 3 balls for 80 yards in limited action in week 12! This week, Watkins is a low-end WR1/high-end WR2 against an Oakland Raiders secondary allowing the fifth most points to opposing wideouts! With Tyrod Taylor looking to get Watkins back into the mix, a big day could be in the works for Watkins!!!
TE
Kyle Rudolph (Dallas @ Minnesota)
Kyle Rudolph is coming off of a great game catching 9 balls for 64 yards against the Detroit Lions on Thanksgiving!! Rudolph has been one of the more reliable TE options in fantasy this season and he should be used as a TE1 going forward!! Up next is a week 13 matchup against Dallas who have given up an average of more than nine fantasy points a game to opposing TEs!! Give Rudolph the nod this week!!
D/ST
New England (vs Los Angeles)
The Patriots defense has been a huge disappointment these past few weeks but an upcoming matchup against rookie QB Jared Goff may be just what they need to get back on track defensively! Over the years, rookie QBs haven’t faired well in Foxborough averaging a 51.7 passer rating with four TDs and 14 INTs!!! New England’s D could be in for a huge outing!!!

What’s Not❄

QB
Jared Goff (Los Angeles @ New England)
Jared Goff had a solid outing against last week against the Saints throwing for 214 yds, 3 TDs, and 1 INT. Last week’s game was definitely a confidence builder for the first year signal caller, but the task will get much tougher this week as the Rams travel to Foxborough to take on the AFC-leading Patriots!!! The Pats have been brutal against rookie QBs at home so don’t even consider Goff in this one!!!
RB
Rob Kelley (Washington @ Arizona)
Rob Kelley, for the most part, has played well in the Washington Redskins backfield since becoming the primary ball carrier. With Kelley being so active in the ‘Skins offense, it’ll be difficult for most owners to bench him this week. However, with a matchup against a Cardinals defense that had allowed an average of 6.2 fantasy points per game with no rushing scores to opposing backs, it’ll be best if you would leave Kelley on the bench in this one!!!
WR
Jarvis Landry (Miami @ Baltimore)
Jarvis Landry has been quite the fantasy disappointment this season!! Landry is best served as bench depth more than an actual starter going forward until he breaks out of his “production slump” phase. Landry has even failed to take advantage of “golden” matchups like this past week against the San Francisco 49ers!! Leave Landry on the bench and keep him there until further notice!!!
TE
Jack Doyle (Indianapolis @ New York Jets)
Early on, it was looking as if Jack Doyle would be one of those “fantasy gems” that surface once or twice a year, but that production has fallen flat, tremendously!!! Doyle has only seen four targets the last two games and has now failed to score a touchdown in every game since week 7!!! With his recent slump in production and a week 13 matchup against a Jets defense that’s surrendered only 3 TDs to TEs all season, Doyle should have a spot deep on your bench!!!
D/ST
Minnesota (vs Dallas)
I know it’ll be tough to bench the highest scoring fantasy defense, but the Vikings play host to the high octane offense of the Dallas Cowboys in week 13! Early on in the year, the Vikings defense was dominant but as of late, they’ve been fairly mediocre!! The ‘Boys have surrendered the fewest points to opposing defenses this year, and they’ll make it very difficult for the Vikings defense to have a productive outing!! Minnesota’s D isn’t one of the better options this week!!!

Ball Is Life: Alex Richman

When you’re in college, you tend to meet a lot of people. At Purdue University Northwest (formally Purdue University Calumet), we built a network for basketball players for open gym sessions. I’ve seen plenty of talent come and go over the years, but Alex Richman is one of a kind. He’s very instinctive, has a high basketball IQ, underrated ball handling and court vision, and has one the best jump shots I’ve ever witnessed with my own eyes. Richman is a true competitor that doesn’t take kindly to losing and demands the best out of his teammates.

Before coming to Purdue, Alex went to Praire View A & M, a mid-major Division I school. Here’s some footage of Richman against other D1 schools, such as Hawaii and Baylor below:

Richman played for Praire View A & M for two years before ending up at Abilene Christain University and ultimately Purdue University Calumet for his senior season. The Melbourne, Florida native also played soccer (team captain) for the Peregrines during his last year of his college eligibility.

wp-1480307495040.jpg
Alex Richman with former Purdue Calumet Men’s Soccer Coach James Drzewiecki

Basketball after college didn’t stop for Richman, as he played semi-professionally with the Arizona Scorpions of the American Basketball Association (ABA) and the Florida Flight of the Florida Basketball Association (FBA). Here are some highlights below from each team.

As you can see from the highlights, the 6 foot 2 guard has the ability not only to make shots and score the ball, but he has the vision to consistently find his teammates. After his stellar performance in the FBA in 2015 (29.2 ppg, 4.6 apg, six 35+ point games, 2nd consecutive all-star appearance), Richman was able to get a tryout and eventually signed with the Harlem Globetrotters for their international 90th-anniversary world tour.

Yes I’m still with the globetrotters. I’m what they call a “taxi” player. If they need a man for a tour then they would call me. I am still working with an agency as well and would pursue an overseas opportunity if it did end up happening. As of now I’m happily content with the globetrotters because they are one of the best in the business world at what they do and take care of their players with great respect.

Everything that Richman has achieved cannot be matched by many, and that’s a testament to his hard work ethic and love for the game. What makes the Florida native the ultimate teammate is that he started “F.A.I.T.H.” (Faith Allows Innovative Training Here). F.A.I.T.H. is an elite basketball training program in Brevard County, Florida.

My vision is to impact as many lives as I can in the community I grew up in. Brevard county isn’t known for basketball but there is so much hidden talent with no one searching. Not only do I train them to reach their full potential but I’m also a mentor to them and help them get to the next level of basketball they want to pursue. I have a great little circle of college, prep, and aau coaches who keep in contact with me and keep an eye on kids I post.

Alex Richman has worked with several high school athletes to prep them for the next level of their athletic careers. Some of the drills are very unique, but all of them are strenuous.

Richman also doesn’t allow his trainees to establish bad habits such as disrespect, a bad temper, lack of promptness, laziness, and selfishness. These 5 attributes are something that college coaches don’t want to see and will not tolerate from their players.  If you have Instagram, follow his page @faith.basketball and check out the videos of the intense workouts.

When you able to share your talents and gifts to help others become better, you are truly achieving greatness. Personally, it takes a humble person to display such acts. I hope Alex continues to use his resources for the greater good, shows humility, and stays a role model for the younger generation. I wish F.A.I.T.H. and your basketball career nothing but that best. Keep up the good work!

HOT OR NOT 🔥❄️ (D.Reed)

What’s Hot🔥

QB
Kirk Cousins (Washington @ Dallas)
Kirk Cousins has been on a roll as of late, so why would you shy away from the hot hand?! Cousins has a tough road test this Thanksgiving against one of the leagues top offenses in the Dallas Cowboys!! Even though this matchup may seem like a tough task on paper, I still believe that Cousins will perform well enough to produce QB1 numbers this week!! With the Cowboys’ secondary slightly depleted, Cousins could very well be on his way to another top 10 QB week!!
Derek Carr (Carolina @ Oakland)
Derek Carr is coming off of a very solid performance, throwing for 295 yds, 3 TDs, and 1 INT against a surprisingly, stingy Houston Texans secondary! In week 12, Carr has a matchup against a Carolina Panther defense that has struggled all season long against opposing QBs! With one of the deadliest pass-catching duos in the league at his disposal in Amari Cooper and Micheal Crabtree, I like Carr at home this week against such a shaky secondary!!!
RB
Thomas Rawls (Seattle @ Tampa Bay)
Thomas Rawls was not listed on the injury report Wednesday, and with Christine Micheal recently departed to Green Bay and rookie C.J. Prosise (shoulder) out for the season, Rawls could be in for a huge bump in production! In his first game back from an injury that kept him sidelined since week 3, Rawls ran for 57 yards on 13 carries and caught 3 balls for another 31 yards! Rawls’ week 11 production was very encouraging seeing as how he split carries with Prosise. With Rawls being the clear cut guy in Seattle’s backfield, all signs are pointing towards a “coming out party” for Rawls against a beatable Tampa front!!!
Jay Ajayi (Miami @ San Francisco)
Jay Ajayi could be in for a huge game as he’s up against a 49ers defense that has surrendered the most rushing yards per game and well over 5 yards per carries to opposing running backs this season!!! Nothing more needs to be said. Plug Ajayi into your RB1 slot this week and enjoy!!!
WR
Steve Smith (Cincinnati @ Baltimore)
Steve Smith caught 8 balls for 99 yards and a score in a loss to the Dallas Cowboys last week and has now found pay dirt in the last two weeks!! It seems as if Smith is becoming Joe Flacco’s “security blanket” both in the red zone and on those crucial plays down the stretch. The “ageless wonder” should see his fair share of targets this week against a Cincinnati Bengals defense ranked 24th against the pass. I believe Smith makes it 3 straight games with a score!! Smith makes for a fine WR2 this week!!!
Larry Fitzgerald (Arizona @ Atlanta)
If you have Larry Fitzgerald outside a PPR league, you’ve been fairly disappointed over the past 5 weeks because he’s failed to find the end zone since his week 5 matchup at San Francisco. Carson Palmer’s struggles have in part been the blame for Fitzgerald’s performance or lack thereof. I expect for Fitzgerald to get back on track this week against an Atlanta Falcons defense that has given up 14 TDs and the 5th most points to opposing pass catchers this season!!
TE
Eric Ebron (Minnesota @ Detroit)
Eric Ebron is starting to become a focal point in the Lions’ passing game!! In the last 3 games, Ebron has no less 70 receiving yards, and he even scored a rushing TD at home last week against the Jacksonville Jaguars! This week Ebron is up against the same Minnesota defense he burned for 7 catches and 92 yds in week 9!! Ebron has the upside of a top TE play against a Minnesota defense susceptible to TEs this year!!!
D/ST
Buffalo (vs Jacksonville)
Buffalo has a great matchup at home this week against a lackluster, turnover prone Jaguars offense!! As long as Blake Bortles continues to turn the ball over at a high rate, opposing defenses will continue to  average 11.5 points per game. If they bring pressure to Bortles early, it could mean another double-digit defense allowed for Jacksonville!!!

What’s Not❄

QB
Blake Bortles (Jacksonville @ Buffalo)
Blake Bortles is dealing with a right shoulder injury and although he is expected to play, I’m predicting a subpar fantasy outing from Bortles on the road against a much-improved Buffalo defense. The only way Bortles could be productive in this one is if the Jags are down a ton early and Jacksonville is forced to chuck it the rest of the game, and even then, it’ll be a stretch for Bortles to become worthy of a start this week!!! Keep a spot for Bortles on your bench this week!!!
RB
Isaiah Crowell (Cleveland @ New York Giants)
With the Giants having surrendered the 6th fewest yards per carry to running backs this season, it’s safe to say that Isaiah Crowell deserves a spot on your bench this week!!! The Browns will most likely abandon the run early, and Crowell’s production will solely be based upon his ability to score on the goal line!!! In a week where there are no byes, I’m sure you can find loads of production at the RB position elsewhere!!!
WR
Marvin Jones (Minnesota @ Detroit)
The season seemed so promising early on for Marvin Jones as he grabbed 18 balls for 408 yards and 2 TDs in his first 3 games of the season. Since then, Jones has only 20 catches for 268 yards and 2 scores in 7 games!!! With his recently poor production and a stingy Minnesota secondary coming to town, it’ll be wise to bench Jones this week and maybe beyond until his production increases.
TE
Cameron Brate (Seattle @ Tampa Bay)
Cameron Brate posted a very disappointing stat line against Kansas City last week, catching only 2 passes for a measly 18 yds!!! Things don’t get any easier as Brate has another brutal matchup on deck for this week against a Seattle Seahawks defense that has allowed only two touchdowns and an average of 6.4 fantasy points per game to opposing TEs!!! Brate wouldn’t be the best TE to turn to in week 12!
D/ST
Indianapolis (vs Pittsburgh)
The Colts pass defense is ranked dead last in the NFL, and the Steelers offense is ranked 7th in passing yards per game. You do the math!!! Stay away from the Colts defense at all costs!!!

HOT OR NOT 🔥❄️ (D.Reed)

What’s Hot🔥

QB

Marcus Mariota (Tennessee @ Indianapolis)
Marcus Mariota is one of the hottest quarterbacks over the past few weeks, scoring 27 and 25 points in his last two games!!! After a slow start to the season, Mariota has picked it up tremendously and is starting to look like a weekly QB1 in any format!!! This week, Mariota has a very favorable matchup on the road against a Colts defense that’s allowing 288 yards a game through the air and ranked 31st against the pass overall!!! Lock “Super Mario” in at the QB1 slot this week!!!

Drew Brees (New Orleans @ Carolina)
Drew Brees and company look to rebound after a heartbreaking loss to Denver last week where he played surprisingly well against the smothering Denver Broncos defense. Brees has a week 11 Thursday night matchup against the defending NFC champion Carolina Panthers who’ve been a “shell of their former selves” so far this season!!! Carolina has been the fifth-most generous defense to opposing signal callers, and I look for Drew Brees to take full advantage of such a tasty matchup!!!

RB

LeGarrette Blount (New England @ SanFrancisco)
Although LeGarrette Blount’s stats of 3.7 yards per carry and 75 yards a game may not “wow” you, it’s his league leading 12 rushing touchdowns that will!!! Blount’s ability to punch it in on the goal line is what has made him a top 5 fantasy back this season!!! Blount has a matchup made in heaven this week against the San Francisco 49ers who are the league’s worst team defending the run!! Blount is a bonafide RB1 in week 11!!!

Latavius Murray (Houston @ Oakland)
Latavius Murray is fresh off a bye and looks to add to his impressive week 9 performance, where he carried the ball 20 times for 114 yards rushing and 3 TDs against the Denver Broncos!!! Like Blount, Murray’s stats aren’t mind blowing, but his ability find “pay dirt” is why his 2016 season has become so productive!! I like Murray to find the end zone once again this week against a Houston Texans defense that has allowed 8 rushing TDs and an average of 20 points a game to opposing backs!!!

WR

Brandin Cooks (New Orleans @ Carolina)
In the week 6 matchup against the Carolina Panthers, Brandin Cooks put up a pretty amazing stat line of 7 catches for 173 yards and one score!!! This week, Cooks has another divisional matchup with the same team he completely shredded earlier this season!!! Although I don’t expect Cooks’ output to match his week 5 performance, I do expect for the speedy receiver to slip past  the defense for at least one score!!! Cooks hasn’t been great on the road, but I like him this week against such an inviting secondary!!!

Allen Robinson (Jacksonville @ Detroit)
Allen Robinson is coming off his best game of the season against the Houston Texans catching 9 balls for 107 yards and a score!!! Surprisingly, Robinsons week 10 performance was his first 100 yard game of the season!!! Robinson gets a week 11 matchup against an exploitable Detroit Lions secondary!!! Robinson should see enough targets from Blake Bortles to boost him to borderline WR1 status for the week!!!

TE

Jimmy Graham (Philadelphia @ Seattle)
The Philadelphia Eagles have been downright stingy to opposing TEs this season, but it’ll be difficult to bench Jimmy Graham in this one!!! It seems as if Graham is turning back into the dominating player he once was with Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints!!! Even though Philly has made it difficult for the TEs, I still like Graham’s chances because I believe that Wilson will remain to rely on him heavily inside the redzone!!! With Wilson and Graham gaining more rapport with every game, this combination will only become more lethal!!!

D/ST

Kansas City (vs Tampa Bay)
Kansas City is once again amongst the league leaders in defense!! After a slow start to the season, Kansas City’s defense has been picking up steam in its last few contests! Kansas City brought the heat to Cam Newton this past week and look to do the same to Jameis Winston and company in week 11!! I look for the Kansas City defense to continue their hot streak as they host a turnover prone Buccaneers team this week!!!

What’s Not❄

QB

Jameis Winston (Tampa Bay @ Kansas City)
Although Jameis Winston is putting together a very impressive 2016 campaign, he’s been hit or miss on the road this season!!! This week, Winston and company travel to a hostile, Arrowhead Stadium as they take on a very tough Kansas City defense who may be getting pass rusher, Justin Houston, back this week! I’m not saying Winston will be a complete flop this week, but you should temper your expectations in this one!!!

RB

Tim Hightower (New Orleans @ Carolina)
Even though the Carolina Panthers have been terrible against the pass this season, they rank fourth against fantasy running backs, and they’ve shut down top running backs, such as Spencer Ware, Todd Gurley and David Johnson on the ground the last few weeks!!! With Hightower on the road and in timeshare with Mark Ingram, I would shy away from anyone in the New Orleans backfield this week!!!

WR

Jordan Matthews (Philadelphia @ Seattle)
Jordan Matthews (sore back) looks like he’s on track to play this week, but he has a tough task on the road against Seattle’s “Legion of Boom”!! At best, I have Matthews listed as a flex/WR3 this week! With the likes of Earl Thomas, Richard Sherman and Kam Chancellor in the secondary, I would lower all expectation for Matthews this week!!!

TE

Cameron Brate (Tampa Bay @ Kansas City)
Cameron Brate has been a very solid TE play the last 3 weeks, scoring a TD in each game!! In week 11, Brate gets a matchup against a recently hot Kansas City defense that has allowed just one touchdown and fewer than 5 points a game to opposing tight ends this season!!! This would be a week that would benefit you by playing it safe and keeping Brate on the bench if you have better options!!

D/ST

Philadelphia (@ Seattle)
Philly has been a solid defense for a good part of the year. However with Russell Wilson starting to get the ball rolling the past few weeks and  Thomas Rawls being added to the lineup, I don’t see how Philadelphia would be able to slow down Seattle’s momentum!!! This is not a defense you want to stream this week!!!
